Thanks Fiona. Good questions you raise. I presume any racist views over time are shaped by either their parents, or the media, or broader society. Did we teach our son the terms he used? Definitely not! But would he have heard them in the media? Yes. In the playground? Probably! Ironically tonight a young women was removed from the MCG for racial remarks to Sydney's Adam Goode. Zero tolerance - the only solution we all agree with.
Hope you are enjoying Vienna. Love the blog. :)

Interesting. It got me thinking where and when racism starts in people. My young daughter is not racist. She is now attending an international school, but even back in Australia, was aware of people with different skin color to hers, but certainly not in a racist way. So when does a person become aware of the differences in a negative way? However to answer your question, I think the school did the right thing. Racism is ugly we have to always try to stop it. Good on your son and his team for sticking up for their mate. That should be applauded and I think that letting the matter drop after the punishment is served is also a good thing. That's my 2 cents worth :)

Love it Fiona. Thanks so much for your thoughts. Especially the extra insight into your Dad's experience. Agree, we walk a delicate line between adult and child. And yes you are probably right, I am defaulting to child mode more often than adult! Remarkably he has agreed to our "terms". One small step forward. Let's hope it pans out for all. Take care.

I can't really comment as parent yet, mine are too young, but I do clearly recall being in the man childs shoes and thinking life was unfair and my parents unreasonable, only to now realize what a good gig I had. The benefit of age and hindsight I guess. Perhaps your answer lies in the name, Man Child. Perhaps rearranging things a little to acknowledge they are almost no longer Child's?? Perhaps cutting them some slack in return for some other contributions might bring more peaceful moments. Perhaps cutting back on the financial support in terms access to facilities in the home. Do they pay for Internet? So perhaps no Internet until the make some contribution to the family (not necessarily financial). What I'm trying to say is try come up with ways of gently showing them what it means to do things their own way. That might show them just how good the home gig is, or at least sometimes see how good it is. I thought I knew it all at 17. I'm a bit older now and realize I still know jack:) Good luck. I'd be interested to know how the canceling of the course discussion goes.... Oh just to ramble again. Just remembered a story my dad told me. My dad had a similar fight with his dad and my grandad cancelled his course. My dad had to pay his own way and when he graduated my granddad gave him his course fees back ... Just a thought.

Thanks Jen. There are days when it all feels so uphill! And days when you wonder if you have completely stuffed it/them up. And then someone tells you they are actually ok, and you can see out the other end. Hanging in there, narcissism and all... :)

Yes and no. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs comes to mind from Psychology 101. This generation have so much because toys, electronics and food etc are so much cheaper than they ever were, so its hard to say no. However, I hire graduates and school leavers into roles, and can I say, they work really hard and are super motivated, (well 99% of them). I truly believe that the values we instill do sink in. Many parents are surprised when they hear how fantastic their young adults are in the workplace - naturally quite the opposite to home! We have been saying "The youth of today" forever. Have faith, they get it.......
